Kocaman Version 1.4

After a long break, the Kocaman software has been upgraded to version 1.4 with an update, albeit a small one. Thanks to this update, length values obtained from calculations are now given with 3-decimal precision. This update was made at the request of a colleague who works with millimetre precision in construction work. However, a more comprehensive update with a new calculation module will come in the coming days.

PostGIS, ArcGIS, QGIS and uDig Integration

As is well known, Geographic Information Systems are database-based systems. All attribute and graphic data are stored and processed in a database. For this reason, desktop GIS software actually has no great effect on storing and displaying data. What matters is the data in the database, and every desktop GIS software can read and edit the data in the database. The extra that desktop GIS software offers is to easily produce information from the data by performing analyses and reports on the existing data. In other words, desktop GIS software lets us obtain the information we want from our existing data easily, functionally, visually and quickly. Considering all this, there is not much advantage in editing data in a very high-end desktop GIS software. Many open source desktop GIS software packages that can properly read and write data from the existing database will also do the job.

In this video tutorial, I tried to show how to access and edit graphic data stored in the open-source database software PostgreSQL and its extension PostGIS with the ArcGIS, QGIS and uDig desktop GIS software packages. While QGIS and uDig have a built-in interface that can connect directly to PostGIS, for ArcGIS Desktop I downloaded an add-on called ST-Links SpatialKit. I achieved integration by connecting to the data in the same database from each desktop GIS software and observed the changes.

I hope you find this content useful.

Kocaman Android Is Now Kocaman

KocamanI had been thinking of updating the Kocaman Android program for a long time, but unfortunately, because I had lost the certificate key, I could not update it as Kocaman Android. So I took the program up again from start to finish, recoded it and, as of today, published it on Google Play under its new name, Kocaman.
Kocaman now also works on phones with small screens, and text entries can be made directly with a numeric keypad. In addition, it currently contains the following modules:
-Calculate Bearing and Distance
-Calculate Angle and Distance
-Polar Stake-out
-Side Point Calculation
and runs smoothly on smartphones with Android 2.2 and later.
You can reach the Kocaman software, which will be updated frequently from now on, by clicking here.

London 2012 Olympics and Surveying Engineering

London_LeicaThe London 2012 Olympics, where we won 5 medals, are over. Yesterday evening, while looking at the news about the Olympic competitions, a Leica Total Station caught my eye in a video. Thinking for a moment that I might have seen it wrong, I rewound it, and once I was sure of what I saw, I had a strange feeling. While athletics events were going on on one side, on the other side surveyors were spread evenly across the field; if I guessed correctly, they were staking out the tracks and stands to be prepared for the other competitions. On this occasion, we saw once again how broad a field of work Surveying Engineering has.

Hotmail Has Become Outlook!

outlook

As part of its transition to Windows 8, Microsoft has now changed hotmail.com to outlook.com. Of course, this does not cause any problems in using email addresses ending in hotmail. On the contrary, thanks to the renewed interface and features, using email takes on a different kind of pleasure. In addition, if you wish, you can open an email account ending in outlook.com for yourself.

This move by the company, which aims to bring all Microsoft platforms together with Windows 8, seems to prove that this time it will truly make a radical change. Frankly, big innovations await technology enthusiasts in September 2012. What will happen in September? Apple will release the iPhone 5, Microsoft will launch the Windows 8 operating system platform and its Surface tablet, and Samsung will probably unveil the new Galaxy Note. Considering all this, if anyone has been thinking of investing in technology lately, it seems it would be worth waiting a little longer.
