EPSG, which stands for The European Petroleum Survey Group, was founded in 1886 and consists of expert researchers, cartographers and geodesers of European oil companies. This group meets twice a year to discuss and coordinate issues related to the oil industry. In addition, EPSG protects geodetic parameters (datum and projection definitions, ellipsoid parameters, etc.) in a relational database by a geodetic working group.

The EPSG code we encounter in many map software today enables us to quickly identify which datum and coordinate system the project we are working on. Thanks to the EPSG code, we do not need to enter the datum and coordinate system parameters into the software separately. In this way, besides saving time in project works, incorrect parameter entries that can be made are prevented. More importantly, thanks to EPSG codes, which are used internationally, when projects with different EPSG codes are desired to be opened in a single project environment, many related software can make datum conversion process based on EPSG codes.

Another important thing to know is that the sensitivity of the datum transforms that the software performs using EPSG code can vary. If the datum transforms that you will perform in your studies need to be very sensitive, it will be more accurate to make the conversion process using the parameters you have obtained as a result of the measurements you will make in your study area.
