Today, one of the possibilities provided by the advances in mobile device technologies and increasing social media applications is the use of map bases in every sense. Although most of the map bases (Google Map, Bing Map, etc.) are commercial, Open Street Map (OSM for short) is an open source, ad-free and non-commercial map application used in many mobile applications. It can even be briefly called the positional equivalent of Wikipedia.
OSM, which started its life on July 1, 2004 with the slogan “Free Wiki World Map”, is widely used today. In addition to many social media applications (foursquare, swarm, etc.), it is possible to see OSM as a map provider even in official applications of some countries. The most important feature of OSM is that its content is produced by voluntary users as well as being used as a map base like commercial applications. Yes, you can easily add content to OSM via www.openstreetmap.org or with some software you can download to your computer, and contribute to the fast and convenient access to the spatial inventory in your city and around the world. You can use Geographical Information System as a base for your projects, download spatial data to your computer, and make queries and analyzes. In addition to being used as an OSM map base, it also offers navigation facilities thanks to the MAPS.ME application.
If you want to share the most up-to-date spatial data of your environment, city or any part of the world with other people, you can do this easily with OSM. All you have to do is to get a new membership and start editing by entering the web page of OSM via www.openstreetmap.org. Hope to see you in a video narration about how data entry to OSM is done in the following days …
