Digitising Maps in ArcGIS 9.3

This video tutorial tries to explain how to digitise a map in ArcGIS 9.3. In this exercise, the operations were done roughly, without paying attention to precision. Those who will do similar exercises will benefit from taking the necessary care with precision during the work. I hope you find this content useful.
Note dated 06.08.2011: Because of the behaviour of many users acting solely in their own interests, the video tutorials have been placed under password protection. Perhaps this way the fact of how valuable knowledge is will regain its importance.

In the Land of White Lilies

Beyaz_Zambaklar_ÜlkesindeAmong the many books I have read so far, In the Land of White Lilies has been one of those that affected me most. The book, which tells of the struggle for existence of the small Finnish people living amid impossibilities, is in fact a source from which many lessons can be drawn. This book, which I think we young people who represent Turkey’s future should especially read, shines a light, as if from the past, on how we can carry our beautiful homeland to a better tomorrow. It shows how important knowledge really is and what it brings with it when it is shared.

Anyway, no need for more words: if you too are asking, “How can I carry our beautiful homeland, Turkey, to a better tomorrow, and what can I contribute?”, I think In the Land of White Lilies is well worth reading.

Datum Transformation from WGS84 to ED50 with Cartesian Coordinates

7-parameter Helmert transformations

A reader recently; He sent an e-mail saying that he wanted to perform a coordinate transformation with cartesian coordinates between his WGS84 Datum and his ED50 Datum, but had no idea what the units of the transformation parameters would be. Since I do not have very detailed information on the subject, after doing a research and obtaining detailed information, I prepared a small application of the conversion process in the Excel program by using the coordinate values obtained by converting a point to the ED50 Datum of this point with the Cartesian coordinates given in the WGS84 Datum of a point sent by my reader. I used the transformation parameters defined by HGK as the transformation parameters, and the values I obtained and the desired values matched exactly.

In the attached file, there is an explanatory flow chart of how the process is done and the solution of the process in Excel. I hope it will be useful in advance.

Jeodezi 1 Seminar Project

Jeodezi_1The Jeodezi 1 program, which Behlül Numan and I designed and coded this term as our seminar course project, can perform many geodetic calculations on the ellipsoid and the sphere. The aim of this seminar project was to enable geodetic calculations that require a high degree of precision to be computed quickly. The program was coded for Windows operating systems in Visual Studio 2010, in the C# programming language, using the .NET Framework 2.0 library. During coding, the variables used in the calculations were defined as double type, giving the results a high degree of precision, and with the algorithm we wrote, results calculated in degrees are displayed in degrees, minutes and seconds (⁰ ‘ “). In addition, the many warnings and checks we built into the program aim to prevent errors users might make while calculating. The calculations you can perform with this version of the program are given in the table below.

Jeodezi 1 Version: 1.0.0

A – ELLIPSOID

B – SPHERE
1 – Ellipsoid of Revolution 1) Spherical Triangle
2 – Latitude Calculation       1.a) Spherical Excess Calculation
        2.a) From B >> Latitude              1.a.1) Spherical Excess with α, β, c
        2.b) From Latitudes >> B              1.a.2) Spherical Excess with α, γ, a
3 – Curvature Calculation              1.a.3) Spherical Excess with α, β, a
4 – Length Calculation       1.b) Legendre’s Theorem
4.a) Meridian Arc Length              1.b.1) Two Sides and the Included Angle
4.b) Latitude from Arc Length              1.b.2) One Side and Two Angles
5 – Area Calculation              1.b.3) Two Sides and Any Angle
6 – Volume Calculation       1.c) Additament Method
1.c.1) Two Sides and the Included Angle
1.c.2) One Side and Two Angles
1.c.3) Two Sides and Any Angle

Although the program generally performs the calculations correctly, since we did not have time to do many complex calculations during testing, there may be minor errors or overlooked parts in the program. If you encounter such a situation, please send an email about it to any of the contact addresses I give below.

This program does not require any installation; it runs simply by double-clicking the Jeodezi_1.exe file extracted from the Rar package. You can download the program by clicking here.

Casio Fx-82 Calculator

Fx-82 PcMy dear friend Behlül Numan, who is also my project partner in my graduation project, has developed a nice software version of Casio’s Fx-82 model, one of the calculators we surveyors can’t do without. This calculator, designed for the computer with the Fx-82 interface, is both very functional and very nicely designed visually. Although it is not yet fully complete, this application, released as version v.0.9.0, already lets us easily perform many calculations as it is. It also looks set to become even more functional over time.
